We started the lecture with looking at some basic things we need to know to successfully access all the information about the course. After that we had the briefing and explanations of what we will do in the following months. The main task is to create several writing based on lectures that we’ll have.
Then we’ve moved to talking about Graphic Design Theories and what is the meaning behind these term. We were asked to write down some words that are new or interesting to research more for us, so after we can make a glossary of things that we’ve learnt during all the lectures. Here are all my words:
Now lets look at the definitions of the keywords I’ve written down
The main idea of the lecture was to understand the concept of something through design or a part of it. We were shown an example of how you can associate design with the object it belongs to and how sometimes you can see the structure without looking at the context. That was a book called “Graphic Design: History in the Writing” (1983-2011). We started analysing what e think this book about and how it is structured.
The next thing we looked at was the back cover and the task was to spot a mistake. The mistake was the date. Instead of 1983 it has 1984. That is a quite serious mistake, because this book is mainly based on time. Also we looked at all the authors of this book and analysed how all this people can be separated in different groups-by gender/by nationality/ etc.
Then we looked at some example of books and covers and tried to figure out what all the covers mean and how they are related to content. As well as this we looked at how design communicates with subject.
This lecture was really interesting and new to me! I really enjoyed that, though it was about basic things we know about Graphic design we still have learnt something new that we didn’t pay attention to before the lecture. The main idea of it was that design plays a huge role in content explanation. Sometimes you can understand the idea behind the design with just looking at it a bit closer. In my understanding Graphic Design Theories is everything about graphic design and what stands for it. This theories teach you not only what GD is but historical and theoretical aspects as well. They show how GD was built through out many years, how it affects our world now and what role it plays in our everyday lives.
